SDG 7, "Affordable and clean energy," seeks to provide access to energy sources that are both financially and environmentally sound.SDG 7 seeks to promote modern, sustainable energy for all, boost the use of renewable energy sources, and raise energy efficiency.
The goal of SDG 13 (Climate Action) is to tackle climate change and its effects as soon as possible. It alludes to actions made to confront and lessen the effects of climate change. Growing sea levels, harsh weather, and growing greenhouse gas concentrations are all happening on the planet.
Our primary source of carbon footprint stems from the utilization of purchased electricity. Although we cannot replace electricity with alternative forms of power, thus we have opted to progressively transition the source of our electricity from conventionally generated to cleaner and more efficient renewable resources.
We have installed a 1.39 MW solar power plant and a 2.7 MW wind power plant. Together the installed capacity of renewable energy is 4.09 MW which can meet our 30% of energy requirements.
We recognize that this action alone may not be adequate, and thus, we acknowledge the necessity of advancing towards deeper decarbonization. Increasing the proportion of renewable energy sources is paramount in our efforts.
Target (Clean Energy): We target to make out the entire process to be operated by green energy by 2030.
To understand our carbon footprint, we investigated the best available methods and found several general and industry-specific guidance and standards available. However, since most of the corporates are using GHG protocol standards, we also decided to align ourselves along with the global reporting trend. However, since ISO 14064 provides an inventory that is verifiable by a third party and hence, we have followed the requirements of ISO 14064-1 as well.
Our carbon footprint has been presented below.
Target (Climate Action): Our primary climate action will focus on expanding the scope of our green energy utilization. Additionally, we aim to publish a standalone sustainability report using a standard that best aligns with our business needs, allowing us to delve into our climate action initiatives in greater detail.
The goal of SDG 8 (Decent Economic Growth) is to promote long-term economic growth through increasing productivity and fostering technological innovation. Effective efforts to end forced labor, slavery, and human trafficking are essential to achieving this goal, as is advocating for laws that support entrepreneurship and job development. By 2030, the aim is to decrease informal employment and the gender wage gap, attain full and productive employment, and decent work, and foster safe and secure working conditions for both men and women.
Sumicot understands that although different goals and targets have been set within each of the SDGs, we should integrate two or more goals and work on them simultaneously.
We provide all the wages that are above the minimum wages act established by the government of India and Gujarat.
We believe that with the salary we provide, our employees should not only be able to afford a decent living but also save something for the future.
Further, our industry requires cotton for processing and indirectly we support farmers to earn a healthy living. The value chain extends from farming to transporting raw materials via Road, rail, and sea transport.
At the global level, this Goal has 7 targets to measure the progress of a nation in ending poverty in all its forms everywhere. A total of 17 indicators have been identified at the national level to measure and monitor the progress of these targets and data is available for all the indicators.
But we at Sumicot decided to create our own Target and track progress accordingly.
Targets: Try to get an estimate of workers who benefited from employment in our value chain as a result of our business activity.
Try to find out the percentage of workers earning a minimum living wage in our supply chain.
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages is the goal of SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). Living a happy and productive life requires being in good health and overall well-being. It covers all of the main health concerns, such as access to safe, efficient, high-quality, and reasonably priced medications and vaccinations; reproductive, maternal, and child health; and diseases that are communicable, non-communicable, and environmental. SDG 3 is focused on lowering child mortality, enhancing maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, and other illnesses that impair people's general well-being, strain families and the public purse, and erode society. It attempts to address the several new health problems that the world is constantly evolving.
SDG 4, also known as Quality Education, aims to enhance the educational system and methodologies to empower workers and students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies essential for their personal development, future employment, and meaningful engagement in society.
Sumicot in its commitment to work towards Goals 3 & 4 prioritizes the health and well-being of the employees at the workplace first. In pursuit of our goal, we provide ear plugs and gas masks to the employees working in the yarn processing area which has relatively higher noise and dust levels as compared to the ambient.
Our manufacturing facility is fully capable of countering fire hazards if arise in the plant.
We at Sumicot believe that there exists a very thin line between health safety and the environment and hence we decided to implement an Environmental Management System. We have implemented the requirements of the ISO 14001:2015 and our premisses is now ISO 14001: 2015 certified.
As part of our CSR initiative, we have been supporting child education by distributing school bags, stationery, and other equipment to schools. This ensures that the quality of the learning environment is not compromised due to lack of resources.
Targets: We have undertaken these activities for the betterment of both our employees and the children in our society. We believe that we are not lacking in any aspect in terms of quality. However, we recognize the importance of reporting them in quantitative terms as well.
Therefore, we aim to...
1. Report on the monetary value of financial assistance provided to the schools.
2. The number of children benefited from our CSR activities.
3. Percent of employees that have been provided with safety kits.
SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation) focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Clean water and sanitation is essential for promoting good health, preventing the spread of diseases, and ensuring overall well-being.
The objectives of SDG 15 (Life on Land) include combating desertification, protecting, restoring, and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, as well as stopping and reversing land degradation and biodiversity loss. These objectives have always been at the forefront of environmental policy formulation. Terrestrial ecosystems, such as wetlands and forests, produce products for human use like food, energy, and raw materials for construction. In addition, land ecosystems offer a number of ecosystem services, such as preserving the quality of the soil, supplying habitat for biodiversity, maintaining the quality of the water, controlling water flow, and preventing erosion.
Sumicot has made sure that workers at our premises have access to clean water and sanitation facilities. We also extend efforts to the local community to support them in access to clean water and sanitation such as schools, and local panchayats.
Target: We aim to publish quantitative data regarding the benefits derived from our efforts, such as the number of schools that benefited and the quantity of clean water units provided.
SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) includes elements that are essential to both sustainable development and economic expansion. Among its many objectives are the development of high-quality, dependable, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure; the promotion of inclusive and sustainable industrialization; the support of human well-being and economic growth; and the facilitation of the development of resilient and sustainable infrastructure with an emphasis on fair and affordable access for all. To secure the sustainable development of many countries, investments in infrastructure areas such as transportation, irrigation, electricity, and more are essential.
We at Sumicot Limited has employed all the latest state-of-the-art processing units which are fully automatic production machines that maintain both product and its quality.
Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable is the main goal of SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities). Social, economic, and environmental sustainability are the cornerstones upon which sustainable cities and communities are constructed. Urbanization has led to a decrease in poverty and the emergence of new jobs and possibilities. Since cities provide chances for social and economic advancement, their sustainable development is essential to the growth of entire countries. Urban areas can meet the problems posed by rapid urbanization by optimizing resource usage, concentrating on lowering pollution and poverty, and putting in place measures to ensure that people have access to electricity, housing, and basic services while also cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
We have contributed towards community development by developing parks and providing benches in public places.
Target: We aim to provide a quantitative description of our activity towards Goal 11 and an estimate of people who might benefit.
Ensuring Responsible patterns of consumption and production is the goal of SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Known by another name, sustainable consumption, and production, it is a method of advancing social justice and economic prosperity in the economy by reducing the adverse effects of human activity on the environment. The use of services and related products that meet basic needs and improve quality of life, while minimizing the use of natural resources and toxic materials, as well as the emission of waste and pollutants over the service or product's life cycle, to protect future generations' needs, is the definition of SDG 12.
We are producing fabrics and yarn which are 100 % organically sourced and 100 % safe on human skin. Our product performance is measured by certifications we have received that include OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
Our commitment to sustainability transcends our production facility and encompasses our entire value chain. We've forged partnerships with Regenagri-certified farmers and sourced Better Cotton Initiative cotton. Additionally, our Fairtrade certification underscores our dedication to fostering fair competition in the market, benefitting all stakeholders.
We have made our commitment to UN Women Empowerment Principles (WEPS).
Target: We aim to improve women's representation in our company and take gender action following the UN Women Principles.
SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) aims to create inclusive, accountable, and effective institutions at all levels while also fostering peaceful and inclusive societies and universal access to justice. To achieve sustainable development, SDG 16 aims to create inclusive, accountable, and peaceful societies. It also aims to give everyone access to justice and to the development of inclusive, functional institutions at all levels.
SDG 17—Partnerships for the Goals—aims to bolster the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development's implementation strategies and give it new life. To accomplish the SDGs, it encourages cooperation and partnerships between diverse stakeholders, including the government and society. Since attaining sustainable development requires collaboration amongst all stakeholders, SDG 17 is vital to fulfilling the other SDGs.
Sumicot currently works with NGOs to bring Goals 16 & and 17 into action. These NGOs work towards humanitarian causes. While we are not directly engaged with the works of the NGO. We provide financial assistance to them via donations.
